Bit Rot
What Happened to This Image?
If you clicked on a broken image and ended up here, you’ve just experienced a phenomenon known as Bit Rot (also called data degradation or link rot).
Over the decades that this website has been online, it has moved across several different hosting providers, content management systems (like WordPress), and storage formats. During those transitions, some files were corrupted, lost, or simply failed to make the journey.
The image you were trying to view is unfortunately one of those casualties. It has succumbed to the slow, inevitable decay of the digital world.
A Musical Tribute to Lost Data
Coincidentally, years ago, my band 404 Not Found recorded a song about this very concept for our album Nightmare Lullaby. It’s fittingly titled “Bit Rot”.
If the digital rot hasn’t claimed it yet either, you can listen to it right here:
(The ugly 60x60 pixel art you clicked on to get here is a custom tombstone meant to represent the digital corruption that claims so much of our early internet history).
